An interview with Ulf Sörman, front man and guitarist of the Swedish metal band Castillion.
Hello Uffe, thank you so much for the opportunity to have a chat for Musicmind
Hello Mascha, it my pleasure
First some question about you, when did you start to play guitar?
I started at the age of 17 or 18, a friend of my taught me some stuff, and the rest just fell into place by itself. I am mostly self-taught, although I took some lessons to improve things that are hard to learn on your own, since I almost only played along to my favorite bands, I needed to broaden my playing a bit
What other musicians have influenced you?
I have gone through phases like most guitarists. I had my Kirk/Hetfield-phase, the Yngwie-phase and so on… Nowadays I try to NOT to play like other guitarists, because I want to find a sound of my own. But…of course I still get inspired by others and pick up stuff, but I always try to make something of my own out of it. Like my great inspiration IA (Freak Kitchen) told me: “All guitarists has to find their own mustache.” I thinks that’s true.. If everybody sounded like Yngwie, there would be no need for him or her.
What kind of equipment do you have?
I mostly play Ibanez S-series guitars, on which I use Dime-Bucker pickups to get the sound I like. I also play LTD, but Ibanez is the favorite right now. Ibanez was my first guitar and my latest. For amplification, I use a rebuilt Marshall JMP1 and Boss effects. I really enjoy my guitar sound, both on stage and in the studio.

Ulf Sörman
Do you have any advice for young musicians?
Well, to have fun while playing. That is the most important thing. If you like metal, play metal and if you like the blues, play the blues. Its very rewarding to play outside your favorite genre, it gives you a whole new understanding to music, but its vital to focus on what’s fun, or else you will grow tired of it all..
Oh,and if you want to succeed in the music business: Work hard. Work your ass off!
What was your experience with bands before Castillion?
None. This is my first band.
You are just back from the road with Decadence, can u tell us a bit more about this gig?
Decadence was one guitarist short and knew me a bit already. It was real simple. I learnt a song and rehearsed with them. Then the guys (and girl) in the band asked if I wanted to accompany them to Italy, and since me and the guys in Castillion are waiting for our new album to be mixed, it was perfect timing. And that was that.
Playing in Italy was fun. A taste of life on the road and playing abroad was a nice experience.

Castillion, lets start from the beginning. How did Castillion form and come to its current line-up?
It all started with me and Robert (that friend I told you about in the beginning). We were in the same kind of music, so we decided to form a band. But because we come from a small town outside Stockholm, it was hard getting the right people for the band. We found out Johannes was a great drummer and the only guy to get if you wanted double kicked bass drums. We hit it off right away.
We stumbled upon Magnus, who had played together with Robert before, then as a guitarist and singer, and he borrowed a bass from someone. We tried this quartet out, and it worked out perfectly.
In 2002 the band recorded the 3 tracks ” Demon Demon “, the first track “Serpent’s Eyes” is sung by you and I really love this song and the vocals.. Later you took the roll as the lead vocalist. Why did you make the decision to do the vocals for the band?
We looked for a singer for a long time. For 2-3years we auditioned many singers, but without a match. Finally, I started singing, and nowadays I hit more notes in key than out of key! Ha ha. So there is where we are today. I sing, and I am enjoying it. Furthermore, I get the singing melodies the way I write it, the way I like it.
Demon Demon was our first demo. We recorded five or six songs in 2002, but only three made it to the final version. We weren’t going to release it at first, but after some remixing we finally did in 2005. We just thought it would be fun to have something to show, but we sold out fast, made more and sold out again. It was exciting to be able to get a few our songs out there.
In 2005, the band reordered the full-length album “Triumph and Tragedy, when is the release for this album and do the songs have a meaning?
Triumph and Tragedy is in mixing, no date is set for release yet.
The songs on this album are more varied. We have some slower, heavier songs as well as the fast power metal kind of songs we had on the demo. We thinks it’s important to mix slow heavy song with the faster ones to keep the listeners attention throughout the record. The live shows also benefit from this. We try to avoid monotony this way. We also try to add a more progressive side to some songs on this album, a thing you will see more of on the next album.

Robert Örnesved
How do you describe in short words Castillion’s music to people?
I usually say heavy prog/power, but its more complicated than that. We are on our way of finding our own path, we are growing our own mustache, and soon the Castillion sound we be easy to recognize. The newer songs are both faster and slower, both lighter and heavier and both more complicated and more strait forward. I think we finally found our own style.
What do you like about live playing and what is the response from the audience?
The live part is the best part. When I write a song, I don’t think about the audience. I write some lyrics, make a riff, and then I put it together. When we rehearse the songs, we don’t think about the audience either. We have fun, try to make the best songs that we can, and try to get that special little something out of it. Then, when we play it up on stage, in front of people and they respond positively, all hard work, all of those hours spent on learning how to play, writing songs, rehearsing and so on, are worth every second. For me, there is nothing like it. It is where I really come alive.
Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal?
Yes, we are looking for someone that can give us a fair deal, independent or major. If we find the right people to work with, that can give us what we want, we will deliver quality goods.
How do you promote the band and shows?
It is hard to get good promotion, that is one thing a label could help us with. One great way to get the name Castillion out to many people is the internet. It is a fairly easy way to make songs available all over the world.

Can u give us a preview what is going on in the band right now?
Well, there is the mixing of Triumph and Tragedy of course, but we are also working on new songs and we almost have another full album ready.
That is interesting, another full-length album. Can u tell us a bit about it?
Not much. Alot of hush hush and secrecy surrounding that album, but I can tell you this: It rocks!
Is there anything else you want to say to the readers of musicmind?
I think I pretty much said it all..Just buy the albums, come to the shows, check out the website, tell us what you think and keep rocking.
Thank u Uffe for doing this interview it was an honor to me, and I hope to catch you live in the future!
It was nice talking to you, I hope we can get in touch after the release of Triumph and Tragedy and talk some more about it in detail.
