The Citadel

The Citadel

Sundsvall, Sweden in 1997: not many people were interested in playing metal-music, and of those that were, their music was less pure rock and more alternative or skimming along the technical extremes of the genre.

This presented a problem for Jonas Radehorn, who wanted to play metal and until then had been part of several bands playing music from a variety of genres.

When Jonas met Patrik Wernekrantz, drummer with local band Bad Experience, on a bus he found a similar soul. Patrik had heard Jonas sing and introduced himself. They started talking about music and personal influences and both seemed to share opinions about the music scene in their town. They also learned that they lived only two minutes from one another.

Time went by and Bad Experience called it a day. Jonas and Patrik agreed to start a new metal band, a band that would blend the blues influenced metal of the 70s with the melodic rock of the 80s and rawness of the 90s.

And so, in late December 1998 a band rose from the ashes of Jonas and Patrik’s former band constellations, when Andreas Carlström joined them to play rhythm guitar. Starting as Purgatory, and playing together for about two years they then took a break for two years.

During that time some of the members played with other bands. Through this, they found bassist Nicklas Sundström and also lead guitarist Kenneth Johnsson. Lead guitarists had always come and gone during the two years of Purgatory. After awhile Nicklas had to leave the band because of family matters, so the band decided to bring in a new basplayer Rickard Persson! Together they recorded the album: The Citadel – Diary of Doom, and along the trip they also found Keyboard player Robin East !

The five decided to get together as The Citadel. Today the band is a tight group of four combining the powerful drumming of Patrik with the rythmical bassplaying from Rickard together with Kenneths awesome guitar riffs and solos, Robins melodic keyboard and on top of that Jonas singing with his godsent voice !!!

The band is now complete and aiming at impressing the world….

New update: The Citadel is proud to announce Freddy Hedefalk as their new drummer! Freddy has ben playing as a proffesional drummer for 15 years and is a highly acknowledge drummer.

The Citadel is writing a record deal contract with swedish label metalfortress.

Castillion

CASTILLION

The quartet Castillion was formed in 2002 in a little town outside Stockholm, Sweden, as a power metal act, but has over the years broaden their sound to be described as just metal.

Their mix of strong melodies and energetic rhythms makes Castillion strong live band, and their music has been proven successful at many live performances.

Demon Demon was recorded in 2002 but was not released until 2005 as a remixed version with only three tracks. As the band had no singer, two of the tracks feature guest singers, however, the first track Serpents Eyes is sung by Ulf, who later took on the roll as the lead vocalist.

In the fall of 2005, Castillion started recording their full-length debut album. The record is a combination of fast, progressive metal and slower, heavy songs. Release date: 2006

INTERVIEW WITH ULF SÖRMAN – CASTILLION

An interview with Ulf Sörman, front man and guitarist of the Swedish metal band Castillion.

Hello Uffe, thank you so much for the opportunity to have a chat for Musicmind

Hello Mascha, it my pleasure

First some question about you, when did you start to play guitar?

I started at the age of 17 or 18, a friend of my taught me some stuff, and the rest just fell into place by itself. I am mostly self-taught, although I took some lessons to improve things that are hard to learn on your own, since I almost only played along to my favorite bands, I needed to broaden my playing a bit

What other musicians have influenced you?

I have gone through phases like most guitarists. I had my Kirk/Hetfield-phase, the Yngwie-phase and so on… Nowadays I try to NOT to play like other guitarists, because I want to find a sound of my own. But…of course I still get inspired by others and pick up stuff, but I always try to make something of my own out of it. Like my great inspiration IA (Freak Kitchen) told me: “All guitarists has to find their own mustache.” I thinks that’s true.. If everybody sounded like Yngwie, there would be no need for him or her.

What kind of equipment do you have?

I mostly play Ibanez S-series guitars, on which I use Dime-Bucker pickups to get the sound I like. I also play LTD, but Ibanez is the favorite right now. Ibanez was my first guitar and my latest. For amplification, I use a rebuilt Marshall JMP1 and Boss effects. I really enjoy my guitar sound, both on stage and in the studio.

Ulf Sörman

Do you have any advice for young musicians?

Well, to have fun while playing. That is the most important thing. If you like metal, play metal and if you like the blues, play the blues. Its very rewarding to play outside your favorite genre, it gives you a whole new understanding to music, but its vital to focus on what’s fun, or else you will grow tired of it all..
Oh,and if you want to succeed in the music business: Work hard. Work your ass off!

What was your experience with bands before Castillion?

None. This is my first band.

You are just back from the road with Decadence, can u tell us a bit more about this gig?

Decadence was one guitarist short and knew me a bit already. It was real simple. I learnt a song and rehearsed with them. Then the guys (and girl) in the band asked if I wanted to accompany them to Italy, and since me and the guys in Castillion are waiting for our new album to be mixed, it was perfect timing. And that was that.
Playing in Italy was fun. A taste of life on the road and playing abroad was a nice experience.

Magnus Stenberg

Castillion, lets start from the beginning. How did Castillion form and come to its current line-up?

It all started with me and Robert (that friend I told you about in the beginning). We were in the same kind of music, so we decided to form a band. But because we come from a small town outside Stockholm, it was hard getting the right people for the band. We found out Johannes was a great drummer and the only guy to get if you wanted double kicked bass drums. We hit it off right away.
We stumbled upon Magnus, who had played together with Robert before, then as a guitarist and singer, and he borrowed a bass from someone. We tried this quartet out, and it worked out perfectly.

In 2002 the band recorded the 3 tracks ” Demon Demon “, the first track “Serpent’s Eyes” is sung by you and I really love this song and the vocals.. Later you took the roll as the lead vocalist. Why did you make the decision to do the vocals for the band?

We looked for a singer for a long time. For 2-3years we auditioned many singers, but without a match. Finally, I started singing, and nowadays I hit more notes in key than out of key! Ha ha. So there is where we are today. I sing, and I am enjoying it. Furthermore, I get the singing melodies the way I write it, the way I like it.

Demon Demon was our first demo. We recorded five or six songs in 2002, but only three made it to the final version. We weren’t going to release it at first, but after some remixing we finally did in 2005. We just thought it would be fun to have something to show, but we sold out fast, made more and sold out again. It was exciting to be able to get a few our songs out there.

In 2005, the band reordered the full-length album “Triumph and Tragedy, when is the release for this album and do the songs have a meaning?

Triumph and Tragedy is in mixing, no date is set for release yet.
The songs on this album are more varied. We have some slower, heavier songs as well as the fast power metal kind of songs we had on the demo. We thinks it’s important to mix slow heavy song with the faster ones to keep the listeners attention throughout the record. The live shows also benefit from this. We try to avoid monotony this way. We also try to add a more progressive side to some songs on this album, a thing you will see more of on the next album.

Robert Örnesved

How do you describe in short words Castillion’s music to people?

I usually say heavy prog/power, but its more complicated than that. We are on our way of finding our own path, we are growing our own mustache, and soon the Castillion sound we be easy to recognize. The newer songs are both faster and slower, both lighter and heavier and both more complicated and more strait forward. I think we finally found our own style.

What do you like about live playing and what is the response from the audience?

The live part is the best part. When I write a song, I don’t think about the audience. I write some lyrics, make a riff, and then I put it together. When we rehearse the songs, we don’t think about the audience either. We have fun, try to make the best songs that we can, and try to get that special little something out of it. Then, when we play it up on stage, in front of people and they respond positively, all hard work, all of those hours spent on learning how to play, writing songs, rehearsing and so on, are worth every second. For me, there is nothing like it. It is where I really come alive.

Are you looking for an independent label deal or a major label deal?

Yes, we are looking for someone that can give us a fair deal, independent or major. If we find the right people to work with, that can give us what we want, we will deliver quality goods.

How do you promote the band and shows?

It is hard to get good promotion, that is one thing a label could help us with. One great way to get the name Castillion out to many people is the internet. It is a fairly easy way to make songs available all over the world.

Johannes Berg

Can u give us a preview what is going on in the band right now?

Well, there is the mixing of Triumph and Tragedy of course, but we are also working on new songs and we almost have another full album ready.

That is interesting, another full-length album. Can u tell us a bit about it?

Not much. Alot of hush hush and secrecy surrounding that album, but I can tell you this: It rocks!

Is there anything else you want to say to the readers of musicmind?

I think I pretty much said it all..Just buy the albums, come to the shows, check out the website, tell us what you think and keep rocking.

Thank u Uffe for doing this interview it was an honor to me, and I hope to catch you live in the future!

It was nice talking to you, I hope we can get in touch after the release of Triumph and Tragedy and talk some more about it in detail.

INTERVIEW WITH SANDER – CYPHER

Interview with Sander of the dutch metal band “Cypher”

Mascha:
Hallo Sander how are you?

Sander:
Hey Masha I am doing fine, thanks.

Mascha:
I like to know a little bit more about you, when did you start to play guitar and how did you get involved to the metalscene?

Sander:
I started to play guitar at the age of 16 on my fathers old acoustic, which I had kind of broken before by throwing it off some stairs. I fixed it up and started messing around on it untill my dad got sick of it and taught me some chords.

Around the same time I started playing I also got into metal. My dad owned a record store at the time and that helped as well as I had acces to a lot of music:) Basicly I started jamming for fun with some friends I hung out with and that resulted in being in my first band.

Mascha:
Ok lets talk about Cypher…. can u tell me a little bit what kind of band Cypher is?

Sander:
Cypher is basically is a death/thrash metal band. Our aim is to write songs who are brutal yet intricate. We like to have our music sick and twisted without losing a sense of melody.

Mascha:
What are your dreams and goals

Sander:
At this moment: getting the album out worldwide on a good label and play live as much as possible. Also for the future writing a new album that blows our debut out of the water.

Mascha:
The release of “Darkday Carnival”, is this the first full length, and can u give us a preview about this album?

Sander:
Yes this is the first full length. We recorded a promo earlier called:
‘Forward Devolution’ which features 3-tracks and was intended to get our name out/known and to get shows.

Darkday I think showcases the different sides of Cypher as l feel it is very diverse. Every song has it’s own atmosphere and from what I heard the album takes a couple of listens before it sinks in which I think is a good thing.

We are just done mixing it and it will be mastered in the coming weeks.
We’re very pleased with how it came out. Jochem Jacobs (producer and also guitarplayer for the band Textures) did a kick ass job, it sounds absolutely killer!

Mascha:
Who writes the songs, what are they about….

Sander:
T (guitar& vocals) and myself have written the material for the album.

Sander:
All lyrics are written by T, his lyrics explore the dark side of humanity and religion. He covers different territories; a lot of it is open to different interpretations. Some lyrics are more him describing sick the things happening in our world. For example the song “Handfull of Darkness” is about a Dutch murderer. This guy butchered and skinned his mother and hit the streets ranting quotes from the biblical “Revelations” adorned in his mother’s skin.

Mascha:
How do you promote your band and shows? Is the band on the road again? Tell us about your next shows and why we should be there

Sander:
We play live very regularly here in Holland, and we love playing live as much as possible. We’re working on booking new shows as we speak. Check the gig section on our site for updates soon http://www.cyphercore.com/

Mascha:
I personally think the metalscene in Holland could be better, but there are a lot of good bands like Cypher, how do you think about the Dutch metal scene?

Sander:
There are certainly a lot of excellent bands nowadays. Especially in the more extreme ‘us-death’ style, which seems to be very popular. Most bands we play with are very supportive too each other. It’s also getting a little harder to play live for underground bands I think, as a lot of venues have less funding to book bands.

Mascha:
How does music affect you and the world around you?

Sander:
Music for me is one of the most important things in life, I have to listen to it all the time.

Mascha:
Can u describe your show, visual and musically

Sander:
We’re not a band with special stage clothes, blow up dragons and naked girls dancing on stage (maybe we should have all that hehe). Some pyro effect and lasers would be cool J.
We just play as hard as possible and bang our heads off;) We try to make it as energetic as we can.

Mascha:
What’s the best and worst thing about playing live shows

Sander:
The best part the interaction when the crowd is really into it. That energy exchange is awesome. Worst part for me is to drive back at night as I am the only one in the band with a driver’s license. We’re still looking for a driver, if anyone is interested?J

Mascha:
Sander what advice would you give to fellow bands?

Sander:
My advice would be is to just play the stuff that get’s you excited regardless of what other people say.

Mascha:
Is there anything you like to say to the readers of Musicmind?

Sander:
Well, check our website in the coming weeks for a preview of our album. An e-card will be available on there soon. Hope u like our music and hopefully see you at one of our shows!

Thank u so much for doing this interview!

Hell yea!! Thank you……………………

We recorded it in Uddevalla 2005 in late august in a small studio, the mixer guy did screw the drums so you cant realy hear some times the dubblebeats little sad,
The demo is from our hearts its Brutal and fast and many is saying we having an own style EXTINCTION style wich is greate to hear..

the demo continas alot of hate aggression dedicated to things in life as frustrating people (Low Lifes) and other false shit and the hate for trends specially in Music LET THE BLADE FALL for trends!

0.0 INTERVIEW KENNETH JONSSON – THE CITADEL

An interview with Kenneth Jonsson, lead guitarist of “The Citadel”

Mascha: Hello Kenneth, how was your day?

Kenneth: Hi Mascha! well my day has be´n great!! alot of work though, but hey, when it comes to music there cant be to much! I´ve actually spendt the whole day playing guitar in one of my friends recording studios! i work as a session guitarist in Sweden so im doing a lot of studiowork!

Mascha: Lets answer first some questions about yourself, what is your background and who are your musical influences?

Kenneth: I´ve started to play guitar pretty late, i was about 18 when i really started to dig in to it! and i could only play like 3 open chords or something, but i started to practise like hell, and suddenly i couldnt be without my instrument! When it comes to influences, i think my dad was my first influence, he was a very competent guitarist during the 80´s. I´ve played with alot of diffrent bands and a lot of diffrent music styles as well. After a couple of years i moved to england to study guitar at ACM! I stayed in england for almost 2 years, after that i moved back to sweden and started to work as a guitarteacher in a musicschool!

Mascha: What guitar players would you say are your main influences?

Kenneth: Right now i would say Steve Morse, he will always be my biggest hero, but i also listen alot to Malmsteen, Vai and Dave Kilminster. Its a tuff question! Because i think everything that sounds good influence me in diffrent ways!

Mascha: What is your favorite thing about playing shows? and Are you playing mostly in Sweden right now?

Kenneth: The thing with me and playing live is proabably the contact with an audience, its a kind of its own! i love the atmosphere and the relationship between the audience and the band during the show!
Right now with The Citadel we are working with alot of new material! its not gonna be to much live gigging with the band during this year because of that, but next year its gonna be a new realease, there is a couple of labels involved right now, but we need to neogiate and se wich label suits the citadel best, and after that there vill hopefully be some touring as well!

Mascha: What equipments do you use?

Kenneth: I have an endorsement deal with ESP guitars, so only play them right now, one of my main guitars is the M-2 urban camo with emg 81´s ESP builds awesome guitars and i am lucky to be one in their team! I also have a couple of ltd´s witch are as fine, and i love them as well!! Im also endorsed by Randall amplifires, i use the mts head and following cabinets!! The Randall Mts is a hell of an amp, and it delivers a sound that is pure amazing. The best sounding amplifire out there right now in my opinion!!

Mascha: What advice would you give to other young guitarists out there?

Kenneth: Play with your ears, what sounds good is good! Put as much work into making contacts and promotion as you do in practising your instrument! and have fun!! if its not fun, its not gonna lead you anywhere anyway!!!

Mascha: Lets talk about The Citadel, how did you got involved into the band?

Kenneth: I did kind of an audituion, i vent from a band called Hollowhead, and neded to break som new ground, i also played in a band called Legendaria together with a baseplayer named Nicklas Sundstrom, Nicklas also played in The Citadel , he told me that the band was in in need of a new lead guitarist at that time, so i tried it, we really liked each other and agreed to do some gigs!! we just worked really well together in the band!!!

Mascha: Can u tell in a short story, the people in Holland what kind of band The Citadel is?

Kenneth: hehe, The Citadel is a hardrocking, doomtasting metalband with an awesome singer, we focus to make cool songs in the doom/metal genre, with alot of great melodies and heavy riffs

Mascha: Whats the hidden meaning of the name The Citadel?

Kenneth: Well there isn´t any hidden meaning at all in the name! its just a cool name that all of us can stand for, if there would be any meaning, it would proabably be something powerful and strong! just think of a citadel…

Mascha: Can u give us an preview of what’s going on in the band at this moment and what can we suspect?

Kenneth: well, i am going out to do some gigs with swedish band M.ill.ion www.million.o.se in sweden and Denmark, and Rickard (baseplayer) are doing some work with his death metal band Diabolical www.diabolical.se, so basicly there is a break right now, but we will as soon as possible start writing and recording new material for an upcoming fullenght album!!

Mascha: How’s the response to your live shows?

Kenneth: Just awesome, we played in england at the Guilfest BBC Radio mainstag ( Festival) together with bands like Marillion and Status Q in front of several thousands of people last summer, the year before we played at the same festival, and where voted as one of the best live acts throughout the whole festival!! also ben doing a gig together with Crusified Barbara this year! Acording to all live reviews whe are a really god live act!!

Mascha: Who in the band is responsible for writing the songs and lyrics?

Kenneth: All of us! instrumentally everyone has something of their own in each song, when it comes to lyrics, Jonas (Singer) and Patric (drummer) writes the concepts!

Mascha: “Diary of Doom”, an great album, can u tell us the story about this album? Is there a special hidden meaning?

Kenneth: Hehe, all reviews say that we are a great doom band, the next Candlemass and so on, It wasnt suppose to be an album in the beginning, all of the songs where just working material, but somehow a few songs got out, and people started to write us e-mails and letters, asking for buying a copy and wanted us to sign autographs, some people even asked for personal stuff, such as clothes…..it was really weird, so we decided to make a few copies to sell, and suddenly we had an album wich sold over expectations!! so together it´s like a working Diary, filled with dooooom .\m/

Mascha: Did it take a long time to record it?

Kenneth: Nope hehe, 5 days!

Mascha: I think Robin East on keyboards is the newest guy in the band, did u guys met Robin before the release of Diary of Doom?

Kenneth: During the recording Patric (the drummer) made the key arrangments and recording. but when we where going to start gigging that summer, we neded a real keyboard player, so we held an audition and Robin got the job!! Robin only does the live job with us!

Mascha: Is there anyting you want to say to the readers of Musicmind?

Kenneth: Yeah, keep on rockin and stay metal!!!! se you out there, some where!!!!

Mascha: Thank u Kenneth for doing this interview!

Kenneth: Thank you for askin me, you have an great Zine!!!! oh, by the way check out www.kennethjonsson.com

INTERVIEW CONNY MANAGER OF SHINING

An interview with Conny, manager and tourmanager of the Swedish band Shining

Mascha:
Sess! Conny how are u?

Conny:
Hi there! Everthing is just fine thank you!

Mascha:
It all started in 1996, Shining has seen line up changes, as so many others have, can you tell me in your words how the band formed?

Conny
To be hounest with you, I cant tell because it started in 1996 in the dark and sick mind of Kvarforth and he is the only one that can tell!

About the lineup, I can´t say anything about it right now because were about to have a new lineup on the next tour so it is a sensitive question but we will do a statement on our website http://www.shiningangst.se

Mascha:
How can u discribe the music of Shining, what do they actualy play, is it death metal/black metal a mix of both? And where is the band based?

Conny:
Personally I would describe Shinings music as Black metal with an undertone of blues!

Mascha:
How did you get involved with Shining and is your role there a full time gig? Can u tell us a little bit about your role as manger in the band?

Conny:
Well, me and the drummer is old friends and he knows that i´m used to spoiled rockstars ha ha ha because I work as a stagemanager on big festivals in Sweden like Swedenrock Festival so he asked if I could help them with all their bookings and all problems that comes with a tour!
It´s not a fulltime job so if there is any more bands that need a manager they are welcom to contact me!

My role as a manager is to make shore that everything works fine on the road, to have contact with all promoters and clubs, take care of all fees, merchendice, website and so on!

Mascha:
Lets talk about “IV – The Eerie Cold”, what’s the story behind this album? The combination of the swedish and the english lyrics makes Shining unique from other bands, can u tell us a bit more about this choise.

Hm…once again it´s only Kvarforth that can awnser that question because all the lyrics are very personal to him so i´ll guess its all about his sick mind he he he

Mascha:
What are the most creative things you are doing to get the word out about Shining?

Conny:
Hm…I do some interwies like this one for example, takes care of the website, i´ll do a lot of mailing to people around the world etc.

Mascha:
Do you play any musical instruments?

Conny:
Ha ha ha ha Hell no, i´m tonedeath so that´s why I work as a manager

Mascha:
It seems the band is on the road again, what’s coming up for Shining in 2006?

Conny:
Well, we´re going to do a show together with Mayhem in Oslo 3 March after that we´re going on a tour together with Urgehal and Solacious Gods in Germany, Hungary,Poland, Austria and Netherlands!
After that the band will start to record the new album that hopefully will be realeased in the beginning or middle of the summer! And we mayby have a tour going on in Australia and New Zeeland!

So feel free to book us after the summer!

Mascha:

DELETION
